Michigan Civil Rights Department Director Linda Parker issued a statement saying she was disturbed to learn of the plan. She said Michigan bans discrimination based on age or sex, so Stelma’s plan would be “a clear violation of the law.” The release was apparently made after Kent County Sheriff Larry Stelma said something about targeting young males for heavy enforcement, but the exact reasons for the statement are unclear in the article. However, this presents an interesting opportunity for those who want to appeal seatbelt tickets issued in Michigan.
